Hundreds of discarded needles cleared from Nottinghamshire beauty spot

Our thoughts...

The pandemic has brought communities together in many ways, and in the face of adversity, local volunteers will often step forward to help clear areas where needles might be found. It is important, however, that anyone handling waste where needles could be present, should be informed and trained in best practice to ensure that the risk of a needlestick injury is kept to a minimum.

  • Hundreds of needles have been found at a beauty spot on the outskirts of Nottingham. Additionally, spoons, wipes and other items of drugs paraphernalia were cleared by local volunteers in the Wilford area. The team cleared dozens of needles, plus several bags of rubbish. Concerns had been raised by a granddad, who was worried that children or dogs may be at risk of needlestick injury.

A spokesman for Wilford Community Group said, "The authorities are doing precious little because they have no money. The city council and police do what they can. It is about the community putting it right when the authorities can't."
